Abstract

The main objective of this project is to perform the experimental measurement, quality test, and thermodynamic modeling of the fluid phase behavior of the liquid-liquid equilibrium based on the extraction of 1-butanol from butyl acetate by using 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride {[EMIM][Cl]}. The experimental process will be performed in equipment composed of the jacketed glass cell with an external circulation of water to keep the temperature constant. Once equilibrium is reached, the composition of the two liquid phases will be obtained through the refractive index and density. Previously, a bimodal curve will be obtained in the cloud point and will be used as a calibration curve (refractive index and density versus composition). The quality test of the experimental data will be performed with the Marcilla and collaborator's method. For the thermodynamic modeling, the Gamma-Gamma (g-g) approach, based on the excess Gibbs free energy model: NRTL (Non-Random Two-Liquids), will be used to obtain the activity coefficients of the components in both liquid phases. Results of the experimental measurements and thermodynamic modeling will be compared through the phase diagram (equilateral triangle) showing the binodal curve and the tie-lines at 298,15 K e 101,3 kPa. As a training mode, the student will perform all the methodology described above with the water + ethanol + n-butyl acetate system at temperatures of 298.15, 303.15, and 313.15 K. (AU)
