Abstract

Sediments deposited on continental margins recorded periods of past variability in sea-level and global climates. The detailed study of sedimentary archives from continental margins can shed light into how margin architectures are impacted during climate and sea-level changes. More importantly, the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of continental shelves during past period of climate change can reveal the potential future effects that rising sea-level will have over coastal regions. Within this context, this research proposal aims to verify the effects that Quaternary climate and sea-level changes had over the stratigraphic architecture of the Northeastern Brazilian Continental Shelf. Potential effects include changes in sediment supply and/or accommodation-space, formation and widening of submarine channels as well as changes in progradational/retrogradational patterns. For that, this project will employ a new high-resolution seismic system (7000J sparker + multichannel hydrophone array) combined with the sampling and analysis of piston and gravity cores from three locations across the Brazilian Shelf aboard the research vessels Alpha Crucis e Alpha Delphini. This proposal is part of the multidisciplinary thematic project FAPESP (16/24946-9), Sea-Level changes and Global Monsoon System - Clues from marine cores in Brazil. (AU)
