The transportation of animals and/or introduction into a new environment are known to be stressors linked to aquaculture and that induce harmful consequences and mortality. Essential oils with anesthetic effects have been used for various purposes and may even be a solution to minimize such unwanted consequences. Low non-anesthetic doses induce calming effects (hyporeactivity), which we hypothesize to minimize the effects of such stressors. In this study, we will use as experimental model the Amazon River prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum), a highly relevant crustacean for Brazilian and world aquaculture. Using that animal model, we will assess whether calming doses of clove oil mitigate harmful consequences (maladaptive behavioral changes and mortality) of these procedures related to aquaculture, which are known to be stressful.
