Abstract

Several procedures intrinsic to aquaculture are stressful, such as transporting and introducing animals into new environments. The use of essential oils with anesthetic properties has been proposed to minimize harmful effects of some procedures of animal production. The application of low doses of these oils, which induce non-anesthetic calming (hypoactivity) effects, can be a way to minimize the stressful effects of transport. However, if the animal's destination is to be introduced in an environment with resident conspecifics, hypoactivity may represent a disadvantage in the exhibition of aggressive behavior and establishment of dominance hierarchy (which reduces the level of aggressive interactions). Herein, we will use the Amazon River prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum) as an experimental model, a highly relevant species for Brazilian and world aquaculture. We will evaluate whether the calming effect of clove oil affects social interactions when animals are introduced into a new environment that already has a specific animal residing in the territory.
