In this project, we will study the works of José Francisco Silva Lima on ainhum published between 1867 and 1907. The disease was typically associated with slaves. From an archival study and an analysis of aspects of medicine in Brazil during the late 19th century, we aim to understand how the disease was initially described, the difficulties in characterizing it, the repercussion of Silva Lima s studies, and, at last, the role of racial issues in these events.
