Abstract

Sickle cell disease is the most common monogenic condition in the world. The affected individuals are more susceptible to infections and hypercoagulability disorders. The pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection, on the other hand, encompasses several thrombotic and inflammatory events. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a worldwide public health crisis, which has been affecting millions of people in a variety of ways. Several international health agencies have included people with sickle cell disease as part of the group at the high risk for severe COVID-19 illness. Aims: Understand and systematize the current state of scientific knowledge about the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 infection in individuals with sickle cell. Methods: This is an integrative systematic review from primary and secondary studies developed with qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methodology, in English, Spanish or Portuguese, which portray the proposed theme. The research will be performed in three databases, based on descriptors chosen by the "Medical Subject Headings". Expected results: Contribute to the synthesis of scientific knowledge on this topic, helping to integrate understanding and thus helping to identify gaps in the area.
