Abstract

The objective of the research internship abroad (BEPE-FAPESP) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is to investigate more broadly the transformation examined in my doctoral thesis: the transformation of Japanese in Brazil from an undesirable immigrant in 1946 to a desirable/celebrated immigrant in 1958. Going beyond the already analyzed documentation (Brazilian newspapers and National Congress' annals), I will carry out two studies at the University of Illinois: one will analyze the negotiation of the Treaty of San Francisco in 1951, which re-established officially the diplomatic relations of Japan and Allied countries, including Brazil; the other will examine the production of 1951 "Afonso Arinos" Law, the first to criminalize racism in Brazil. While the first study will provide an image of the international-geopolitical transformations after World War II, the second study will reveal the local-national changes concerning racism. Both studies will be benefited by the extensive experience of the supervisor, Prof. Dr. Jerry Dávila, whose academic production includes studies about "Afonso Arinos" Law as well as post-war Brazil's diplomatic relations.
