Abstract

Infection triggered by bacterial colonization is still a critical challenge to be overcome in bone implant applications. Moreover, the demand for innovative antimicrobial strategies is also dramatically rising due to the severe antibiotic resistance in bacteria, contributing to the eventual removal of the implant. In response to these issues, this proposal aims to study a new alternative and combinatorial approach, consisting of the development of micro-arc oxidation (MAO)-treated surfaces immobilized with antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Coatings grown by MAO have displayed good tribological and osseointegration properties. On the other hand, AMPs provide a long-lasting and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity without negatively affecting host cells. These novel modified surfaces will be tested against relevant oral bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus aureus and Porphyromonas gingivalis. In addition, it is expected to offer contributions for elucidating the mechanism of action of the immobilized AMP. (AU)
