Abstract

The lightweight steels of the Fe-Mn-Al-C system were developed due to the demand of the automotive industry to combine high strength and ductility. The lower density in comparison to conventional steels is achieved by aluminum addition, which in solid solution increases the lattice parameter. However, aluminum is also responsible for a reduction of the Modulus of Elasticity, which is undesirable and must be restored. In this context, the introduction of ceramic reinforcement particles in metallic matrices has proved to be an effective strategy to increase the modulus. Currently, titanium diboride is being studied extensively as a reinforcement particle due to its excellent combination of physical and mechanical properties. In steels, TiB2 can be formed in-situ by an eutectic reaction, so that the size, distribution and morphology of the particles can be controlled by the cooling rate during solidification. Through additive manufacturing (AM) and powder metallurgy (P/M), it is possible to produce composites with uniform distribution of refined particles in a metallic matrix. The objective of this research internship is to produce two different compositions of a stiff, strong, light and ductile steels through the association of TiB2 particles on a FeMnAlC austenitic matrix by AM and P/M. This research internship is planned for a period of 12 months at the Materials Technological Institute of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (ITM - Instituto de Tecnología de Materiales - Universitat Politècnica de València) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Vicente Amigó Borrás focusing on AM and P/M processing routes and characterization techniques.
