Abstract

Bacteria of Salmonella genus are pathogens that can infect animals and humans. Some Salmonella spp. serovars can settle down in poultry animals, in the digestive tract, and be disseminated without causing any apparent clinical signs. However, the presence of these bacteria can pose a risk to public health, making poultry products a potential source of infection to humans. Little is known about the factors associated with genetic diversity that could be contributing to the adaptation and persistence of Salmonella spp. in both animal and human hosts. Furthermore, conventional methods of serotyping and identification of genetic determinants in Salmonella genus is laborious and can elapse for several days. Considering these aspects, we intend herein to investigate the antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and phylogenetic diversity of relevant, but some neglected, Salmonella serovars and identify possible genetic variations related to adaptation to the host in poultry through the Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
