Abstract

The intensive Aquaculture systems may increase animal stress, cause the suppression of the immune response, and increase the risk of spreading diseases among fish, which can result in high mortality rates. Currently, the number of regulated medicines for use in the Aquaculture sector is limited. Thus, studies for the inclusion of new alternatives for therapeutic and/or prophylactic drugs in Aquaculture are desirable. In this context, levamisole, an anthelmintic drug used to treat infections caused by nematodes in humans and animals has been studied as an option for use in this sector. Previous studies report that in addition to being effective in controlling pathogenic infections, levamisole has an immunostimulant effect and can be used to reduce the deleterious effects of stress in fish. In this context, this project aims to carry out studies to assess the use of levamisole in Fish Farming. For this purpose, procedures for incorporating this drug into the feed will be evaluated, aiming to obtain a medicated feed with a low risk of leaching the active ingredient into the aquatic environment. Furthermore, an original analytical method will be developed, optimized, and validated using the promising sample preparation techniques, QuEChERS-DLLME, and analysis by LC-MS/MS, aiming to obtain a high selectivity and detectability method for the quantification of levamisole residues in Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fillet samples. The analytical method will be used to analyze samples from a residual depletion study with animals after administering the medicated feed, to estimate the withdrawal period to be recommended, according to the context of food safety intended for human consumption.
