Abstract

Tied to the thematic project nº 2019/22387-0, the objective of this research is to reevaluate the theories of social democracy given their relevance in the context of the debates on the "crises of democracy" and the increase in social inequality at the present moment. This scenario poses challenges to the basic premise that the insertion of social democratic parties in representative institutions would occur, or at least tend to be resolved, in a relatively harmonious way. The current context presents signs that the relationship between institutional stability and political representation in modern democracies carries a tension that not only challenges this premise, demanding its due reevaluation, but also requires a more in-depth examination, to propose a new theoretical understanding of this process. Bearing this aim, we propose an investigation of two cases that, although distant from each other, deviate from the pattern of the golden post-war era: the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Weimar Republic and the Worker's Party (PT) in the New Republic. In both cases, the cycle of insertion and institutional protagonist action of these parties ended in serious crises, despite the programmatic moderation adopted by both. The research draws on Norbert Elias' reflection on the relationship between established and outsiders, to problematize the idea of democratic stability and to develop the hypothesis that the social-democratic experiment is marked by unstable political balances that can be understood in a new key.
