Abstract

The study of the political and economic dynamics in popular areas of food sales remains urgent and necessary, especially in metropolises, where food exchange and distribution activities are concentrated. Thus, both in São Luís (Brasil/MA) and in New York (EUA/NY), the population struggles with low wages and high costs of the basic needs for survival, which justifies the demand for a popular food sales circuit, where the prices of the meals are frequently cheaper. This important popular food sales circuit has been configured in these cities and can be analyzed under the methodological perspective of the two circuits of the urban economy: one upper and another lower. Our research aims to reflect about the lower urban economy circuit in the popular bars and restaurants, as well as at the street food vendors, which makes an important economic and alternative force dynamic for the poorer in the cities that produce and survive from this socially necessary market.
