Abstract

With the present research project, we seek to understand the roles and functions of middle cities by the spatial interactions that are established within a hierarchical network of cities. They generate constant flows of inhabitants of the small towns around these regional centers, making them arrangements populations of polarizing nuclei. In this way, the resulting processes of these constant flows, complex and shape urban networks increasingly heterogeneous and centralized in middle cities, making the role and centrality of small towns increasingly articulated to the regional dynamics of cities middle, a relationship explained by the process of socio-spatial differentiation. took up as an outline for the study, the middle cities of Chapeco, Santa Catarina; Maringa, Parana; Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, and Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, and their respective arrangements populations, using data obtained by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and comparing the methodologies used in each study, being applied, also, interviews, in order to obtain information and qualify the spatial interactions established between middle and small cities.(AU)
