Abstract

Long periods of sedentary behavior have been associated with vascular dysfunction and reduced cognitive function in different populations. Although the recommendation to take breaks with short walks has been widespread, its benefits are still not a consensus. Over the past few years, several studies have shown that isometric exercises promote positive adaptations in vascular health, benefits that could have an impact on cognitive function. However, how much this exercise can be an efficient strategy to minimize the consequences of sedentary behavior is still uncertain. Therefore, the objective of this project will be to compare the acute effects of sedentary behavior breaks using the isometric squat exercise supported on the wall in indicators of cardiovascular health and cognitive functions of older adults. Participants will perform, in random order, three experimental sessions (control, break with isometric squat exercise supported on the wall [IE] and standard break ([walk]). All sessions will have a sedentary period of 4 hours. In the standard break session and the isometric break session, participants will perform walking and isometric squat exercise breaks every 30 min, and in the control session, they will remain seated without breaks. Before and after this period, will be evaluated vascular function, blood pressure, cardiac autonomic modulation, and cognitive functions.
