Abstract

The purpose of this research is to understand experiences of pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The trajectory of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium of two Afro-Colombian and popular-class women with different experiences will be analyzed: one assisted by a traditional midwife in a rural town and the other giving birth in a hospital in the capital, Cali. Differentiation categories such as social class, age, education, spirituality/religion, marital status (among others) will be taken into account for comparative research. The category good childbirth will be an analytical key to understanding these experiences in Valle del Cauca, in view of social inequities in health. For this, I will also analyze the panorama of childbirth in Colombia, involving the health system, public policies and activists and understand the differences and understandings around different categories such as race/ethnicity, class and gender.
