Abstract The behaviour of the diffusion flame is intrinsically related to the flow field, and the heat released by the flame is one of the main sources of amplification of hydrodynamic instabilities. Therefore, the stability analysis of reacting flows is crucial for the development of new combustion systems. In this project, the stability of the flow field generated by the double Tsuji diffusion flame - a flame derived from the traditional Tsuji flame - is investigated. This new configuration - introduced by this applicant in his master dissertation - consists of a cylindrical burner that radially and uniformly ejects gaseous fuel, while impinging flows bring gaseous oxidiser from the ambient atmosphere towards the burner. The main feature of this flame is the representation of continuous geometric variations, from the counterflow mode (near the vertical symmetry axis) to the coflow mode (near the horizontal symmetry axis). The aim of this project is to demonstrate the interaction between combustion and hydrodynamic instabilities under different modes. Thus, the double Tsuji burner is the natural choice, as it was introduced by the proponent in his master's degree. Besides the fundamental interest, this study also has industrial potential, as the double Tsuji burner emits little soot, according to preliminary studies. Further analysis is required to determine its stability, and this project will do just that. (AU) | |
