Abstract

This project aims to examine whether and how parties' organizational characteristics influence the performance of Brazilian political institutions, particularly by analyzing their effects on national and subnational electoral arenas over time. Based on a comparative analysis of the main political parties, this study aims to address a significant gap in Brazilian politics: to analyze the consequences of party organization differences (intra-party democracy and party strength) on electoral behavior (electoral volatility, dissimilarity, and concentration), and then discuss their implications for party system and democratic consolidation. Additionally, some institutional and socio-political control variables will be considered. The proposal has been examined by eleven parties, covering twenty years (2000 - 2020). To this end, this research stage seeks to deepen the theoretical basis of the research through access to foreign productions and to deepen the methodological techniques used to analyze the data already collected in Brazil. arenas over time.
