Abstract

Very low birth weight preterm infants have associated complications, with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) as a highlight due to its high mortality, economic and social impacts, including a higher risk of complications and comorbidities, compromising the patient's quality of life, both in the period neonatal and long-term. Prenatal and postnatal factors increase the risk of BPD, with the disease being an important indicator of neonatal care. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the incidence and characteristics of very low birth weight preterm infants with BPD in a tertiary care neonatal unit. Materials and methods: an observational, retrospective cohort study, with prospectively collected data, including preterm infants younger than 34 weeks of gestational age, with birth weight up to 1500g, born at the service and admitted to the neonatal ICU from January 2015 to December 2019, deaths occurring in the first 24 hours of life, major malformations and congenital infections will not be included. Variables evaluated: independents related to newborns and mothers, exposure, dependents. The results will be analyzed by average, standard deviation, median, quartiles, frequencies, and percentages. Expected results: understanding the reality of the service, helping to develop care protocols for the prevention and treatment of the disease, and planning strategies for the patient segment, making it possible to reduce the possible repercussions in the short and long term.
