Abstract

Recently, there has been an expansion in using isotopic methodologies in ecological and ornithological studies. However, this methodology is still under-exploited in Brazil, raising the need for training scholars capable of applying this tool in the Brazilian ecological field. Isotopic tools have proven to be very efficient for monitoring and interpreting the effects of anthropogenic impacts on animal ecology, enhancing the need for the development of this research theme in Brazil. The main objective of the exchange project is to improve the PhD student's knowledge of isotopic methodology, promoting a strong collaborative network with international researchers who already use this tool. The activities will be mostly carried out at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), under the supervision of Dr. Jason Newton, an expert researcher in isotopic ecology applied to animal diet and movement, who will help the student develop and improve the skills for the analysis of stable isotopes. The collaboration of Dr. Davide Dominoni (University of Glasgow) through the collection and provision of samples (e.g., blood and feather of birds, leaves, invertebrates, and anthropogenic food) and his research interests in urban ecology will ensure the dovetailing of the practical isotope measurements with applied ecology. Additionally, there will be an exchange of knowledge on the similarities and differences of the effects of anthropogenic impacts (e.g., urbanization, land use change, habitat loss) on the ecology of Neotropical and Palearctic birds, promoting macroecological knowledge to the student.
