Abstract

This doctoral internship is part of the thesis "Literature is Teratology: the aesthetics of aberrant images in Mircea Cartarescu", under the direction of Fábio DE SOUZA ANDRADE at the Department of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature (DTLLC) at the University of São Paulo (USP - Brazil). Planned to take place at Sorbonne Université, France, with funding from FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo) under the supervision of Bernard VOUILLOUX, this internship aims to deepen the investigation on the literary images in the work "Nostalgia" (1993), by Mircea Cartarescu, from a theoretical-aesthetic reflection. The present research proposal is conceptually based on the "affectes" and "perceptes" (Deleuze) that make up the sensitive fabric of Cartaresque's work, i.e., the images understood as medium, in Vouilloux and Coccia's sense, that exist in the very immanence of the literary text. In this sense, we understand this set of images as a real foreign language (Proust) that the Romanian writer composes. In fact, if works of art, including literary ones, can be considered as "blocks of sensations," and if the problem of writing, according to Deleuze, also affects seeing and the other senses, our hypothesis, still provisional, is that there is a visual that is not restricted to the idea of artifactual images (iconic and plastic); this visual, as well as the other senses, are perhaps produced in a virtual way by the verbal. Besides the tropes, that is, the figures of speech (metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, comparison, etc.) and the logic of the narrative discourse alone, it is a matter of thinking of the literary work in question also as a producer of images. To verify this hypothesis, we start from a textual analysis of the procedures used by Cartarescu in his novel "Nostalgia" (1993). It seems to us that an aesthetics of literature is possible to be sketched only on the problematic path of an investigation of the sensitive "devenir" of language related to horizons of meaning.
