Abstract

Sirius is the new Synchrotron Light Source in Brazil, built and operated by the Brazilian Synchrotron Laboratory at the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials campus. At Sirius' storage ring ultrarelativistic electrons are kept at 3Gev energy in confined and stable orbits under the influence of electromagnetic fields. The injection of electrons into the storage ring occurs off-axis, the efficiency of which depends, among other factors, on a sufficiently large dynamic aperture (DA) - the region in transverse space in which the dynamics of the stored electron is stable. In the design phase, Sirius' DA was numerically optimized in the accelerator model using various techniques, including multi-objective genetic algorithms. During commissioning, the optimized lattice was implemented. Recent measurements indicate that Sirius DA, although sufficiently large for an injection efficiency of around 85%, can be yet increased upon fine-tuning of sextupole magnets strengths, which govern the beam nonlinear dynamics. In this master's project, the student will study the nonlinear dynamics of relativistic electrons in 4th generation synchrotron storage rings, characterize Sirius' nonlinear dynamics and study the implementation of correction and optimization schemes to optimize the DA and injection efficiency.
