Influence of the addition of zirconia whiskers and nanoparticles on the elasticity modulus of dense hydroxyapatite bioceramics

Abstract

The Brazilian meat industry has great economic relevance in the world, however, its environmental impact is alarming, due to the amount of waste that it generates, mostly bovine bones. Thus, obtaining Hydroxyapatite (HA), the main inorganic component of bones, for the synthesis of dense bioceramics, is becoming increasingly relevant. Bioceramics of bovine HA have excellent biocompatibility, bioactivity, and osteoconductivity, however, it has high porosity and poor mechanical properties. In order to solve these problems, the present study aims to use zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles and whiskers, in 3 different concentrations (1, 5, and 10%). For this purpose, 6 experimental groups and 2 control groups will be formed, pure HA ceramics and commercial ZrO2 ceramics. The efficiency of these reinforcements will be verified through the resistance test at 3 points, for determination of the elasticity modulus. The obtained results will be displayed in tables so that they can be statistically analyzed, in case of parametric distribution, using analysis of variance by multiple criteria (ANOVA) to determine the possible differences in the experimental conditions; Tukey's test will be used for individual comparisons. In the case of non-parametric distribution, Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests will be used. For all cases, a significance level of 5% will be adopted.(AU)
