Abstract

The Maison du Brésil at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP) was founded in 1959, but the idea of a house for Brazilian students, researchers, and artists in the French capital was introduced in the 1920s. According to the bibliography on the Franco-Brazilian scientific and cultural relations in the 20th Century, scientific-intellectual networks worked for the international circulation of knowledge, objects, and people in the period. From the French side, the Groupement des Universités et Grandes Écoles de France pour les relations avec l'Amérique Latine, created in 1908, played an important role for those networks. From the Brazilian side, it is relevant to emphasize the participation of Professors from the Rio de Janeiro Polytechnic School and the National Faculty of Medicine. In this context, right after the CIUP foundation, in 1921, initiatives for the construction of a Brazilian house have been launched. The objective of this postdoctoral internship at the Centre de Recherches sur le Brésil Colonial et Contemporain at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (CRBC/EHESS), from September 2022 to August 2023, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mônica Raisa Schpun, is to carry out documentary research in the French historical archives; to participate in scientific meetings (seminars, conferences, workshops) in France and other European countries; to organize the data resulting from the documentary analysis considering the discussions with other research groups; to present the results in scientific reunions; and to write a paper by the end of the internship, to be submitted to an international journal.
