Abstract

Breastfeeding is a practice of utmost importance for puerperal women and newborns since it strengthens the affective and nutritional bond and enables proper growth and development, such action is established in the cultural and social context, so ancestry is a factor that strengthens breastfeeding, another factor that has great influence is the social environment and its perceptions, such as structural racism that pervades black women and the act of breastfeeding. This study aims to understand the meanings of breastfeeding for black women. This is a qualitative, exploratory research that will have as central elements the life aspects and experiences of self-declared black women in the breastfeeding process. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted and analyzed through thematic analysis. The development of this study is expected to show that human breastfeeding, besides being a right, is an empowering resource for these women and what is the meaning of this practice/act in their lives.
