Abstract

Pipeline leaks are a major problem as a large amount of water is wasted between treatment plants and consumers. In an attempt to solve this problem, water supply companies use devices to locate leaks in their pipe networks. Listening devices such as listening rods, geophones and leak noise correlators are the most popular equipment used around the world. Although listening devices are effective when used by a qualified and experienced operator, they are instruments that measure at a single point resulting in a search based on trial and error as they measure intensity but do not contain information on the respective direction, unlike correlators. The scope of the project consists of helping to investigate the applicability of the main techniques for Localization of Acoustic Sources presented in the literature, using vibration measurements carried out on the ground surface; use of different types of sensors to measure vibrations on the ground surface in a few different proving grounds. In addition, it is intended to apply computer vision techniques aimed at vibration analysis, detection and tracking of displacements focusing on observing vibrations on the ground surface indicating the presence of leaks as an alternative to classical techniques and their limitations.
