Abstract

This scientific initiation project is linked to a young researcher aid that aims to study the scattering of light by a dense sample of cold strontium atoms. Within this context, we want to monitor the modifications of the universal decay curve of the atomic fluorescence after fast turning off of an excitation pulse, that is, the modifications of the superradiance and subradiance of the sample caused by the sample density. This modification will carry information about the way in which the collective modes emerge in this dense sample, and which changes with respect to the collective modes of a diluted cloud. The scientific initiation student will implement a numerical simulation that will allow us to obtain the eigenvalues of the eigenmodes of the atomic cloud and average decay curves of the power emitted by the cloud from the turning off of the incident excitation laser light, for different values of density and optical depth of the cloud. This theoretical work will guide the data taking in our experiment, in which the student will participate through discussions about interesting parameter regimes, based on the calculations he will perform.
