Abstract

This post-doctoral research proposal is the continuation of Monacé's doctoral thesis (2021) dedicated to understanding the economic phenomenon of sending money (voye kòb), common among Haitian migrants (dyaspora) living in Brazil. But in this new project, the emphasis is on the study of emotions in the context of Haitian remigration. The research proposal aims to minimize the research gap on Haitians in Brazil by addressing social and emotional aspects of the economic practice of sending money in the context of Haitian migration and remigration from Brazil to North America, with both an economic sociology and a sociology of emotions approach in order to understand their pains, sufferings, joy, hatred or love for the host country or the country of origin, nostalgia for the country and their families, homesickness, sacrifices, regrets, frustration, etc., especially considering the context of whether they send money or cannot send money. Our main argument is this context would lead the dyaspora in Brazil to migrate to a stronger economy in order to continue sending money to Haiti, being emotionally stable; they enjoy the prestigious status of dyaspora and continue to be positively sanctioned in symbolic capital and recognition, avoiding the negative sanctions of ungrateful and irresponsible. Therefore, we seek in the emotional elements' justifications for migration and remigration, beyond a literature that points only to the economic variable as central in this decision. (AU)
