Abstract

Several recent studies have investigated the possible adverse effects of air pollution on pregnancy. Studies in both humans and animals indicate that air pollutants may increase the risk of intrauterine growth retardation, low birth weight, preterm delivery, and birth defects, which in turn are factors that affect infant mortality and morbidity. Currently, in large urban centers, vehicular traffic is the main responsible for environmental concentrations of atmospheric pollution. Different indicators have been used to estimate the impact of air pollution on health. In this project, concentrations of pollutants measured by CETESB, estimates obtained from satellite readings and indicators related to vehicular traffic will be used. These indicators will have their impact on fetal death evaluated using logistic regression models.
