Abstract

COVID-19 is the name given to the disease caused by the new coronavirus, called SARS CoV-2, whichoriginated in the city of Wuhan, Hubei, China in December 2019 and which quicklyspread around the world. For reasons that are still unclear, children and adolescents withCOVID-19 have less severe symptoms and much lower case fatality compared toadults and even with other viral diseases that affect this age group (2, 7-10). Objectives:Considering the scarcity of studies that describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics inchildren, the main objective of this study is to describe these characteristics in children andadolescents affected by COVID-19 and assisted in the SUS health network of a city in theinterior of São Paulo, during the period of strict quarantine, as well as in the period back toclasses. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, retrospective and observational study. will bereviewed the data in the medical records of all patients who tested positive for COVID-19between 0 and 15 years old who were treated in a city in the interior of the state ofSão Paulo since testing was introduced in the hospitalized population or with symptomssuggestive of the disease. The severity of cases will be classified according to the ConsensusChinese. A descriptive statistics of the data will be performed with frequencies and percentages for the qualitative variables and mean, median, standard deviation, minimum andmaximum for quantitative variables. The associations between the severity classification ofinfection by SARS-CoV-2 and the categorized variables will be carried out the Chi square testor Fisher's exact when necessary. In the case of continuous variables that presentsymmetric distribution, the tStudent or ANOVA test will be performed. It will be considered p<0.05as a level of significance. The program used to perform the analyzes will be the SAS programversion 9.4.
