Abstract

The debate about dilemmas raised by certain pasts for involving sensitive themes has challenged historical research in the present time. Based on an investigation of a conflicting past of rural banditry in Brazil, this research internship project in Argentina intends to deepen disputes about the meanings of these pasts, which are both popular and unpopular among re-elaborations of rural memories, representations of bandits and their places in national times. Considering the legacy of banditry violence in Latin America throughout the 20th century, the history of its memory, attentive to the political uses of this past in an integrating, polarizing and conciliatory dimension among folkloric, revolutionary and heritage staging, is a way of understanding some of its dilemmas. This internship allows expanding analyses of transnational dynamics in research and performing ethnography through three significant archives to think about the process. These archives are the "Museo de Arte Popular José Hernandez", "Instituto de Investigaciones Gino Germani" and "Instituto Cultural del Chaco". Focusing on an alternative "memorial turn" to memory canonical approaches, the supervision will be carried out by the researcher Claudia Feld, one of the founders of the "Núcleo de Estudios Sobre Memória" (CIS-CONICET/IDES). In this itinerary, the proposed dialogue with her research group on important discussions for the historiographical agenda of the contemporary world also will be fundamental for writing central parts of the ongoing investigation.
