Abstract

The rapid expansion of aquaculture has raised concerns about environmental and economic externalities. The definition of modern methodologies for managing and measuring environmental externalities and potential ecosystem services from aquaculture enterprises are the main demands of managers and investors who have increasingly sought to implement Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) concepts in their enterprises. In this context, this study aims to measure the natural capital of aquaculture enterprises installed in Neotropical lakes and reservoirs by integrating methodologies that calculate the environmental and economic carrying capacity with practical ESG indicators. To this end, aquaculture enterprises will be selected with specific criteria. From these, historical and in loco data will be collected, such as climatic, zootechnical, economic and social information, which will be used in classical financial and economic modeling, as well as in risk analysis. The environmental carrying capacity will be determined through simulations of the maximum allowable phosphorus load and the maximum allowable fish production. The potential ecosystem services will be mapped and then the best ESG practices to be employed at the site will be defined. Based on the integration of the methodologies, an indicator will be developed to measure the natural capital of aquaculture enterprises.
