Abstract

This project aims to investigate the philosophy of Raimundo de Farias Brito (1862-1917) and its receptions, relating them to French philosophical traditions that are fundamental to his production. His extensive work, in addition to a volume of poems and articles in periodicals, consists of the following books: the series Finalidade do mundo, in three volumes (1895, 1899 and 1905); A verdade como regra das ações (1905); A base física do espírito (1912) and O mundo interior (1912). In the first place, I will analyze his texts relating them to Brazilian philosophical productions of the 19th century, in which he was formed and with which he debates. Particularly important here will be Tobias Barreto (1839-1889) and Sílvio Romero (1851-1914), members of the Escola de Recife. Then, I will examine the reception his texts received from Catholic authors, such as Jackson de Figueiredo (1891-1928), Leonel Franca (1893-1948) and Alceu Amoroso Lima (1893-1983). Considering the way in which Farias Brito was read in Brazil is interesting because it reveals particularities of his reception, which considered him founder of Brazilian "integralist" movement and even of philosophy in Brazil itself - positions that do not exactly coincide with his philosophical reflections. Examining this group of authors, moreover, sheds light on the paths taken by Brazilian philosophy in the first decades of the Republic, contributing to the understanding of movements of ideas and the birth of institutions that were decisive for the paths followed by the Brazilian philosophy throughout the 20th century.
