Abstract Translational Studies of Head and Neck Cancer in South America and Europe (HEADSpAcE) is a consortium of over 15 partners with a long and successful record of collaboration in head and neck cancer (HNC). It was funded by the European Union and coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, to understand and improve early detection and clinical outcome of HNC, which is the 6th most common cancer globally, but with high mortality rates due to late diagnosis. The consortium involves eight key areas of research, including enriching head and neck biorepositories, studying the reasons behind the late-stage diagnosis of HNC, diagnosing HPV in the clinic, studying the distribution of HPV+ HNC, and consolidating international practices on treatment and disseminating HNC research. The HEADSpAcE consortium in the University of Glasgow is conducting a study to investigate the reasons for poor prognosis in head and neck cancers. For this reason, this study aims to explore individual reasons for late diagnosis, as well as lifestyle and cultural factors. It will involve an epidemiological analysis of socio-demographic differences in delay in diagnosis and prognosis of patients with HNC. Clinical and pathological data of patients with HNC will be collected including gender, ethnicity, age at diagnosis, marital status, habits, HPV diagnosis, type of treatment, recurrence, metastasis, clinical stage, and survival. The study will also investigate whether gender and marital status act as independent prognostic factors in late diagnosis and survival, and whether there is a difference between advanced stages III and IV related to marital status.
