Abstract

The opening and evolution of the South Atlantic Ocean is largely related to the paleoenvironmental changes that occurred in the Early Cretaceous and is a direct consequence of the rifting of Gondwana Supercontinent. The rift system of the Brazilian Continental Margin was formed as a consequence of the extensional tectonic processes separating Africa and South America, giving rise to a continuous system of sedimentary basins. The evolution of these basins is related to the rift, transition and post-rift stages, during which rock layers consisting of important petroleum systems were deposited. Therefore, the understanding of the geological and paleoenvironmental setting of the formation of these rocks is of scientific and economic relevance. However, there is still a long scientific debate about the time of deposition and the nature - continental or marine - of the sedimentary deposits representing the rift and transition stages, as well as new data and hypotheses that discuss the first marine ingressions and gateways, and the occurrence of epicontinental seas in the Brazilian Mesozoic marginal and interior basins. To contribute to this debate and add new data to geological knowledge, this project proposes an elemental and isotopic geochemical investigation of the rift and transitional phases of the Sergipe-Alagoas and Araripe basins, which have excellent stratigraphic records of their evolutionary stages, enabling a complete investigation of the opening and evolution of the South Atlantic Ocean during the Early Cretaceous.
