Abstract

Acetaldehyde produced endogenously or by exogenous exposure is associated with several pathophysiological processes. Accumulation of endogenous aldehydes leads to genotoxicity. Aldehydes react with amine and thiol groups of proteins, nucleic acids and some lipids and promote changes in these biomolecules. Recently, a pathway for the production of acetaldehyde via ketoacid dehydrogenases, especially pyruvate dehydrogenase, has been proposed in the literature. However, the biological conditions for this generation are still unclear. This project aims to monitor the formation of isotopically labeled acetaldehyde by mass spectrometry in different cell lines and under different stress conditions, such as hypoxia in cells supplemented with [13C6]-glucose. This project is part of studies being carried out by CEPID-Redoxoma.
