Health literacy of caregivers of patients undergoing cranial neurological surgery: a mixed-methods study

Abstract

Introduction: Health literacy (HL) is defined as individuals' knowledge, motivations, and skills to access, understand, evaluate, and apply health information to make decisions that will help them navigate through health systems, as well as promote, prevent, and care for their health. Aim: This study aims to analyze the effect of telemonitoring on informal caregivers' HL using the HLS-EU-Q6. Furthermore, it aims to examine the postoperative outcomes of adults, and the elderly undergoing neurosurgery and developing and implementing a protocol for telemonitoring patients in the postoperative period of cranial neurological surgeriesand who are discharged from the hospital with some type of dependency. Method: A prospective cohort study will be conducted using quantitative approach, with a one-year follow-up to verify the effect of telemonitoring on HL and the factors associated with postoperative outcomes. Simultaneously, the qualitative approach will seek to understand the experience of caregivers regarding surgery, postoperative care, and telemonitoring to elucidate the different facets of the phenomenon. Furthermore, we will propose a study on developing and implementing a protocol for telemonitoring patients in the postoperative period of cranialneurological surgeries. Expect Results: Telemonitoring conducted by the surgical team is expected to improve the health literacy of caregivers and, consequently, the outcomes of patients undergoing cranial neurological surgeries. This study can contribute to the health of adults, the elderly and the family of patients when considering the dimensional aspects of health literacy, which integrates indispensable postoperative attributes, such as skills, understanding, information, and communication. Additionally, it will present a telemonitoring protocol as a strategy to improve health literacy and outcomes of patients undergoing cranialneurological surgeries.
