Abstract

Alexandrite (BeAl2O4: Cr3+) is one of the chrysoberyl varieties that is widely found in Brazil. Recently has been studied as a natural dosimetric material because its composition combines BeO and Al2O3, oxides used commercially as dosimeters. Previous studies with beta radiation developed in Brazil showed that alexandrite presents five TL peaks (heating rate of 1ºC/s), ~75°C, 130ºC, 175ºC, 250ºC e 300ºC, which the last two peaks have dosimetric characteristics. In addition to beta radiation, the dosimetric peaks of alexandrite have been investigated, showing promising results for UVC and X-ray radiation, allowing a wide area of applications. However, at this moment, more in-depth investigations are proposed for the study of defects in alexandrite, such as studying the theoretical models involved and apply instrumentation varied of the TL techniques (phototransferred thermoluminescence - PTTL). Therefore, the objective of this project is to carry out the theoretical analysis and investigate the possibility of the presence of deep traps and their behavior in the mineral. The work will be supported by luminescent research group at Rhodes University that has expertise in PTTL from minerals. (AU)
