Abstract

This paper aims to study the iconography of coins over the four decades of the reign of Vittorio Emanuele III, the last de facto king of Italy. Through memory and historical context of the events of the Risorgimento, of Vittorio II, Umberto I, the Great War and Mussolini's ventennio, the Italian coins of the period offer a vast resource for understanding how war, nationalism and classical antiquity formed a cultural repertoire that circulated hand in hand in everyday life.
