Abstract

The flowers and ornamental plants market moves large export and export volumes around the world, supplying the most diverse importing countries. Countries holding advanced genetic engineering technologies lead the export rankings, in transactions that most often involve costs related to intellectual property that tend to increase the final value of the product. Among the commercialized plants, orchids stand out, being the most sought after by consumers. In this sense, it is valid to establish strategies aimed at supplying the national floriculture market, verifying the recurrent need to export these products from international commercial centers. An alternative to overcome this deficit is the development of national programs for plant genetic improvement, combined with the use of high standard behavior techniques, such as sowing and in vitro cultivation. Furthermore, studies to establish patterns of segregation of traits of interest in orchids would enable better targeting in crossings, as well as the inclusion of cultivars with desired horticultural and ornamental traits. Thus, in the present project the species Brassavola gardneri will be fixed as a common parent in crosses with different hybrids and species of the subtribe Laeliinae, aiming at the end of the process the transmission of hybrids with multiple annual flowering and flowering at different times of the year.
