Abstract

Nowadays there is a great exaggeration in the use of petroleum derivatives and fossil materials in general, which harm the environment and bring problems to the population, which has made the search for alternative and renewable feedstock sources extremely important. One of the substances used as a coating against corrosion and abrasion of substrates is polyurethane (PU), whose raw material is derived from petroleum. However, the proposed methodology for the preparation of polyurethanes is flexible enough to allow the replacement of the original raw material by a renewable one. This project intends to develop new class II organic-inorganic PU-silica hybrid materials, whose organic part is composed of a PU synthesized from diisocyanate and glycerol/sorbitol, silica network, obtained from ethyl tetraorthosilicate ( TEOS) modified by (3-aminoproyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). The challenge of the project is to seek and determine the best formulation for the application of these new hybrids in coatings that present high thermal stability, damage resistance and good performance as a protective barrier against the corrosion of metallic substrates.
