Abstract

This Scientific Initiation Project, linked to the FAPESP Process Project: 19/18664-9: "The Human Occupation of Southeastern South America throughout the Holocene: An Interdisciplinary, Multiscalar and Diachronic Approach" brings an unprecedented research proposal for Brazilian Science by examining, through the palynological technique, changes in vegetation and climate in an area of the state of São Paulo in the context of the first human occupations in South America during the Holocene. Among its specific objectives are: a) To characterize changes in the vegetation physiognomy and its floristic composition in the study area during the Holocene; b) Associate these changes with human activities and/or climate change and c). Determine phases of human occupation with or without agricultural activities from palynological and archaeological data. This project also proposes an internship abroad, at the Florida Institute of Technology, USA, under the supervision of dr. Mark B. Bush, specialist in Quaternary Palynology and recognized as one of the ten most important scientists in the United States.
