Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic endocrine disease characterized by insulin resistance in target tissues and pancreatic dysfunction. The DM, especially type 2, is closely associated with an increase in the prevalence of obesity. Most of the diabetic complications are related to the increase in the generation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are responsible for promoting structural damages to several biomolecules and activating pro-inflammatory pathways. In order to increase the effectiveness of the DM treatment, combined therapy strategies between classic antidiabetic agents and natural products have been suggested. Cissus verticillata (L.) Nicolson & C.E. Jarvis is a plant species whose preparations obtained from its leaves have already demonstrated antidiabetic properties, both in rodents and humans. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the changes in physiometabolic parameters and biomarkers of glycoxidative stress in mice fed a high-fat diet (in vivo model system of obesity/insulin resistance) treated with the hydroethanolic extract of leaves from Cissus verticillata, alone or in combination with metformin, as well as to evaluate the anti-AGE potential of the extract through an in vitro model system of protein glycation.
