Abstract

Domestic violence against women is an age-old phenomenon. However, studies have significantly increased in recent years due to data availability and changes in social norms. Most of the literature has focused on the effect on the primary victims, disregarding the spillover effects on their children. Understanding the intergenerational effects of this violence would shed light on a more complex discussion about the socioeconomic implications of violence against women. This article seeks to identify if having a mother who has been a victim of domestic violence affects children's socio-emotional development and what type of violence affects children the most. Initial evidence from our unique socio-emotional test suggests that children whose mothers were victims of domestic violence during their pregnancy performed 11 points worse on average. (AU)
