Abstract

Since March 2022, with the support of CNPq, I have been developing the research "Slavery in nineteenth-century novels: an almost forgotten memory". The research aims to study the presence of slavery in Brazilian and Portuguese nineteenth-century narratives, a theme that, even though present in several novels, does not have a significant critical fortune. The present project intends to focus on a specific part of the research, the novels published in Portugal and the Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia, and the existing critical studies about them. At the same time, due to the similarities between the history of slavery in the Portuguese and French colonies, I also intend to study the French novels that deal with slavery, so that I can compare them with the Portuguese ones.
