Abstract

It has to do with research in Parisian archives which coincides with sabbatical period of 180 days obtained with the Institute of Advanced Studies from USP. The proposal emerges from a long-term project developed with the National Council of Research, CNPq, (2020-2024) - "A virtual modernist scene: Three travellers in the Europe of the Avant-Gardes" - which presupposed, besides other goals, to rescue in the Parisian archives the exhibitions and performances on show in Paris, simultaneously to the months and years that Oswald de Andrade, Alcântara Machado and Flávio de Carvalho travelled to Europe in the decades of 1920 and 1930. The pandemic period postponed this field research and now, with the possibility of being out of classes for six months, I think about doing it concomitantly with the project which was selected by IEA: "Four essays on the encapsulated theatricality in the Brazilian modernist scene". In it I intend to conclude the writing of a book, already in process, on those names of Brazilian modernism - Mário and Oswald de Andrade, Flávio de Carvalho e Alcântara Machado - who aggregated in their works, from distinct perspectives, traces of a kind of virtual modernist theatricality in Brazil. For doing this research of documents, I asked the support of THALIM, the CNRS unity of Theory and History of Arts and Literatures of Modernity, from Sorbonne Nouvelle, in Paris. Her director of Research, Marie-Madeleine Mervant-Roux, accepted to host my proposal and offered me, besides contacts with other researchers of that unity who are working on the Paris Universal Exhibition of Art an Decoration from 1925 (an special locus in the frame of events that I elected to search for in the archives), full access to the National Library - Richelieu and François Mitterrand - and to the National Archive.
