Abstract Leprosy affects the peripheral nervous system, manifesting mainly through chronic skin infections. The treatment of chronic wounds represents an important portion of SUS expenditures. The search for accessible alternative treatments has been growing, therefore, the use of natural compounds is being explored in treating these injuries, due to their low cost when compared to synthetic drugs. Among these products, green propolis is considered a pharmacological healing potential, as it consists of compounds that age in antimicrobial function and also in the modulating action of the immune system. A randomized clinical pilot study on the potential healing action of green propolis in ulcers resulting from leprosy was controlled by our research group and financed by FAPESP. Previous results showed that there was a significant difference in the percentage of reduction in the area of the lesion in the group treated with an ointment containing propolis compared to the control group, and this difference was quite pronounced during the first two weeks of treatment, which correspond to the proliferation and inflammation phases of the cicatrization process. In this sense, this project intends to investigate, in vitro, the effect of green propolis on the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts. Considering that the microorganisms that live on the skin quickly affect how quickly wounds heal, it is considered important to ensure their antimicrobial activity. The objective is also to identify enzymes and cytokines present in the exudate of previously treated wounds to predict in which healing phase green propolis acts. Therefore, the proposed project aims to bring a new treatment alternative for chronic skin lesions, in addition to mitigating the consequences of leprosy, a pathology that remains a public health problem in Brazil and the world. | |
