Abstract Recently, there has been an increase in the number of people experiencing food insecurity in Brazil, measured quantitatively through a survey published by the Brazilian Network for Research in Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security, which has led the country to re-enter the map of Hunger of the United Nations. The numbers show that people in socioeconomic vulnerability, as well as peasant families are the ones who suffer most from food insecurity, demonstrating how this problem is not only in the acquisition of food, but a lack of food sovereignty. Sustainable Development Projects are important in the fight against hunger in Brazil because they are spaces for people with knowledge in managing agriculture to produce and sell foodstuffs to local markets and provide impoverished families with a means of generating income. However, the literature lacks qualitative information about the perceptions of those who produce food in these settlements about sovereignty and food security, so this research intends to investigate, through semi-structured interviews and passive observation, how members of some families from the Santa Helena rural settlement in São Carlos traced their trajectories there to understand the meanings they give to sovereignty and food security and what expectations they have about public policies to promote the production and sale of food. | |
