Abstract

Luminescent materials are capable of emitting light under the excitation of an energy source. Among these, photoluminescent materials display this property when irradiated with electromagnetic energy. Such materials, usually composed of an inorganic lattice doped with an activating ion, are commonly used in the technological field, with applications in lighting, LEDs, lasers, sensors, etc., which makes the studies in this field attractive. Rare earth oxysulfides (RE) are compounds of high chemical and thermal stability and allow for the effective incorporation of lanthanide ions due to their crystalline structure, ensuring good photonic performance. Cerium oxysulfides, specifically, have been sparsely reported in the literature until now, especially regarding their properties, which provides an opportunity to expand the studies on them. The present project aims to synthesize Ce2O2S and Ce2O2S:TR3+ (TR3+: Pr3+, Eu3+, Tb3+, Tm3+, Yb3+) materials through microwave-assisted synthesis, in order to obtain these materials quickly and cost-effectively, aiming at the development of new materials for technological applications, as well as conducting fundamental studies to expand the understanding of the photoluminescent properties of the mentioned host lattice.
