Abstract

In the Castilian society of the fifteenth century, in which the concern with the formation of religious and clerics grew, collections of sermons began to circulate with a view to perfecting preaching in vernacular language. These collections were both reportationes of sermons and manuals with ready-made models for preachers to elaborate their own sermons adapted to a specific audience. By taking the work Evangelios moralizados, by the Dominican Juan López, as a research target, this study will isolate the small narratives present in it to highlight the edifying role they fulfilled at that moment, in addition to the rhetorical tools employed and the way the author approaches the theme of penance. More precisely, this research will examine the edifying functions attributed to exempla for establishing conduct, associating them with one of the themes most brought up by Juan López in his work, that is, the encouragement of a penitential life.
